Lake Maggiore is one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy as a location to celebrate your wedding. Located between Switzerland and Italy, it has always enchanted future Italian and foreign spouses, especially couples from Northern Europe. It is truly magnificent for us wedding photographers to be able to work on the shores of this enchanted lake full of breathtaking villas, historic villages, islands to visit. Throughout history, several Italian and foreign artists have been fascinated by it and have stayed there.
It is considered the largest of the pre-Alpine lakes, hence the name “Maggiore”. It is of glacial origin and is surrounded by reliefs and hills that protect it from the cold northern winds. The lake has among its tributaries the Ticino, which has traced a historic waterway connecting the Po Valley with Central Europe. According to the well-known American magazine Women’s Wear Daily, Lake Maggiore is the most chic place for weddings in Italy, thanks to a suggestive panorama and some of the most beautiful villas for receptions in the world.
It is important for future couples to understand what type of reception they want because Lake Maggiore offers several options for getting married: castles, fortresses and villas. Starting with the Castello Visconteo in Locarno, the Rocca di Arona and the Rocca Borromea in Angera famous for its doll museum. Among the villas, the Borromeo Palaces on Isola Madre and Isola Bella, the eighteenth-century Villa Ponti in Arona and Villa Treves in Belgirate, which hosted Gabriele D’Annunzio and Giovanni Verga among its guests, are certainly of interest. In Stresa you can find Villa Ducale and Villa Pallavicino with its zoological park, while in the splendid Verbania there are splendid villas such as Villa Giulia, Villa Taranto and the nearby Villa San Remigio. As photographers we can tell you that Lake Maggiore has more vivid colors than other lakes in Northern Italy precisely because it is more open, more extensive, as well as having a decidedly aristocratic “outfit”.
